The secret is the low carb dietThe definition of healthy eating has changed significantly over the past two decades.
The old paradigm dictated several "truths", which turned out to be inaccurate: -Carbohydrates should constitute the majority of what you consume -Counting calories is the best way to lose weight Many people who followed the old paradigm were unable to lose weight. Some even gained weight. We now know that eating healthy involves a different set of rules: -Minimizing carbohydrates, which cause the release of insulin and lead to weight gain -Eating at least 5 servings of healthy, low-carb vegetables every day -Minimizing the amount of processed foods -Drinking at least 8 cups of water a day -Eating a good amount of proteins and "healthy" fats Jessie and I had a problem: we love carbohydrates. Well, it's mostly me. I love pasta, chocolate, ice cream, fruits, anything that's sweet. I never thought I could live without those foods. We faced a significant challenge when we decided to start eating healthier, because of our love of carbohydrates. But I was inspired by my sister, who decided one day to cut carbs from her diet and start running every day. She lost a significant amount of weight, and is now an amazing competitivee runner. Being creative and resourceful people, we decided to try to make carb-free cooking and eating fun. The purpose of this blog is to give other people ideas on how to make amazingly tasty, yet extremely healthy, meals, and to have people share their ideas and recipes with us. So, here is a summary of the healthy eating plan. It is extremely simple. Complicated plans do not work, and have a low long-term adherence rate. The simpler the diet plan, the better. You will find scientific evidence for this plan here: -Limit daily net carbohydrate intake to no more than 50 grams (Net carbs is equal to total carbs minus fiber) -Avoid gluten at all cost -When eating carbohydrates, favor those that also contain dietary fiber, as the fiber will limit carbohydrate absorption (for example, when consuming fruits, favor eating them rather than drinking fruit juice) -Eat as many low-carbohydrates vegetables as possible -Favor healthy fats (poly-unsaturated fats) over saturated fats. Summary: If you limit your carbohydrate intake to less than 50g a day, and derive most of your daily energy intake from protein and healthy fats, you will change your metabolism, and you will lose weight. The scientific evidence can be found here. |
